How to play
Start from a word. Each player changes one letter to make a new real word. Run out of time, play a word that isn't real, or give up, and you're out. The last player standing wins.
HELL
BELL
BALL
BALD
Your turn
- Tap the letter in the word you want to change.
- Pick its new letter from the keyboard. The new letter turns green.
- Tap Play word before your clock runs out.
On a computer you can type instead: letters, arrow keys to move, Backspace to undo and Enter to play.
The rules
- One letter at a time. Same length, same positions. HELL can become BELL, but not HELLO or HOLD.
- Real words only. The dictionary checks every word and shows everyone what it means. Plurals and verb forms count. Names, abbreviations and old spellings don't.
- No repeats. A word that's already in the chain can't be played again.
- One try. If your word isn't real, you're out. In a game on one phone, everyone can agree to accept a word the dictionary missed.
- Beat the clock. The clock pauses while the dictionary checks your word.
- Win by playing. If everyone else goes out before you've played a word, you get one final turn. Play a real word to win. If you go out too, nobody wins.
Ways to play
On one phone
2 to 8 players pass one phone around. Each player taps Start my turn when it's their go.
Vs computer
Play against the computer at Easy, Medium or Hard. Easy sometimes gets stuck. Hard never gives up and tries to leave you the fewest moves.
Online with friends
Choose how many players, create a game, and share the invite link. Everyone plays on their own phone, and the game starts once every spot is filled. No sign-up needed.
- Tap emoji reactions while someone's thinking. They float up on everyone's screen.
- Share the watch link so others can follow the game live without playing.
- If someone drops out for 15 seconds, the game moves on without them. They can rejoin with the same link.
After the game
- Rematch with the same players, and pick 3, 4, 5 or 6 letters for the next word.
- The leaderboard counts wins across rematches.
- Share result sends a picture of your word chain to WhatsApp, X or anywhere else.
Tips
- Vowels are easy to swap: BELL, BALL, BILL, BULL.
- Watch out for words with few neighbours. They can trap the next player, or you.
- Shorter words are faster to play. Longer words have fewer moves and are harder.
